An alphabet truth is the fact that each scientific study outlines a definite purpose. As far as it concerns this specific case, my wish is to try to reveal to the utmost full extent, basing only on reliable resources, materials and documents in the Bulgarian archives, the not so known cultural and social life of the Ukrainian emigration in our country in the period between the two World wars. In other words – the task of this study is not to exaggerate or to underestimate, but to identify and analyze conceptual problems for a historical period with concrete participants and in which, as it seems, there are still white spots in historical aspect.

             For me personally this matter is quite interesting. Because its tracing introduces us in rather less known pages from the history of the Bulgarian-Ukrainian relations, but it also reveals a grand layer of human destinies, events, contradictions, dreams, realities, failures and achievements of hundreds of Ukrainians, expelled out of their country under a row of sad and terrific circumstances, which crashed their lives. And together with everything pointed out here I will try in this book to make everything necessary to release the tackled by me problem from the stored within half an age ideological slag, which the socialist iconography had imposed powerfully in all spheres of science and culture.

            In this study I met many interwoven life destinies of intelligent but ordinary people, of peasants, soldiers and quite different in professional plan Ukrainians, who in many cases were left at the edge of their survival and found in Bulgaria their second country. It seems to me, that the most essential in this study is the fact, that all these representatives of the life-sustainable and jaunty Ukrainian people, who, when coming in our country, follow step by step along their life path, which takes them to an honourable public position and to serious achievements in the area of the human labour to successes in the spheres of art, science and culture. This is a not less emotional subject line in my modest attempt to trace, as already mentioned, only on the bases of archive documents, the created by the Ukrainian emigration in Bulgaria during the reviewed period. 

            In accordance with a row of valuable assessments and opinions the appearance of the contemporary Ukrainian Diaspora in Bulgaria is related mainly with the name of the outstanding scientist Mihailo Dragomanov (1841 – 1895). Arriving in Sofia in 1889 on the personal request of the Minister at that time of the enlightenment Georgi Zhivkov, he gives a significant contribution to the development and the establishment of the Sofia University as a first rate higher school in our country. After his several months stay, his daughter - Lidia /1866 – 1937/ comes, who later marries Ivan Shishman /1862 – 1928/, an outstanding Bulgarian professor - slavist. In 1918, when Bulgaria officially acknowledges the Peoples’ Republic of Ukraine, Prof. Ivan Shishman becomes our first ambassador in Kiev. In 1895 in Sofia arrives for a visit upon an invitation of the families Dragomanovi and Shishmanovi Lesia Ukrainka /1871 – 1913/, whose poetical tours in our country turn into a cultural sensation.

            The first “wave” of Ukrainians, which reaches Bulgaria, is in connection with the bloody events in Russia and Ukraine during 1917. At the beginning regarding their social staff it has been small in number with prevailing presence of the intellectuals. But a bit later another significant mass of Ukrainian emigrants – around 2 000 people – settle in Bulgaria. The established by them cultural and public organizations exist till 1944. In the period between 1945 till the destruction of the Soviet Union in 1991, Bulgaria for the third consecutive time is flooded by a new generation Ukrainians. This time this happens thanks to the mixed marriages. According to unofficially confirmed data till 1991 the constantly established citizens from Ukraine in Bulgaria are between 5 and 6 thousands people. During the counting of the population in our country during 2001 exactly 2 489 people have pointed in their declarations, that they have Ukrainian origin.

            By this paragraph I would like to close the last page of my attempt to make a more detailed research in one generally eminent period of the history of the Ukrainian emigration in Bulgaria for the period between the two World wars. And as a finale I would like instead of the worn out newspaper clichés to cite the words of the honourable Bulgarian - Prof. Ivan Shishmanov, who says in an interview the following wise words: „I remain with the firm conviction, that both Bulgaria and Ukraine possess all conditions for a future close friendship. Let’s foster this gladly existing between both peoples understandings, and keep them without giving reasons for doubts in our warm feelings”.

У В О Д

Азбучна истина е, че всяко едно научно изследване си поставя определена цел. Що се отнася в този конкретен случай, то желанието ми е да се опитам да разкрия възможно най-пълно, въз основа единствено на достоверни източници, материали и документи в българските архиви, не дотам известния културен и обществен живот на украинската емиграция у нас в периода между двете световни войни. С други думи казано – задачата на това проучване е не да преувеличава или да принизява, а да идентифицира и анализира концептуални проблеми за един исторически период с конкретни участници в него и в който, както по всичко изглежда, все още има бели петна в историографско отношение.
Лично за мене тази проблематика е твърде интересна. Защото нейното проследяване ни въвежда не само в малко познати страници от историята на българо-украинските връзки, но и разкрива наистина колосален пласт от човешки съдби, събития, противоречия, мечти, реалности, поражения и постижения на стотици украинци, прокудени от родината си по силата на цяла редица тъжни и страшни обстоятелства, които пречупват завинаги техния живот. И заедно с всичко посочено до тук ще се опитам в тази книга да направя всичко необходимо за да освободя разглеждания от мене проблем от натрупаната в разстояние на половин век идеологическа шлака, която социалистическата иконография беше наложила властно във всички сфери на науката и културата.
В това проучване срещнах твърде много преплетени житейски съдби на интелигенти, на обикновени хора, на селяни, войници и какви ли не още твърде различни в професионален план украинци, които твърде често, останали на ръба на оцеляването, намират в лицето на България втората си родина. Струва ми се, че най-същественото в проучването ми е това, че всички тези представители на жизнеустойчивия и жизнерадостен украински народ, идвайки у нас, тръгват стъпка по стъпка по своята житейска пътека, която ги извежда до достойно обществено положение и до сериозни постижения в областта на извечния човешки труд, до завидни успехи в сферите на изкуството, науката и културата. Това е още една не по-малко вълнуваща сюжетна линия в моя скромен опит да се опитам да проследя, както вече посочих, единствено върху основата на архивни документи, сътвореното от украинската емиграция в България през разглеждания период.
Най-накрая ще си позволя да споделя, че оценката на написаното от мене в последващите страници, принадлежи единствено на любознателния читател.
